Analysis of the capabilities of both countries
May 2023
When Chiang Kai-shek evacuated the Chinese government to the island of Taiwan on December 7, 1949, he could not believe what was happening. He had been the ruler of China since about 1927, he had managed to unite the country after the fall of the emperor and had faced the criminal invasion of Japan. However, this war had greatly weakened him and he, along with his Kuomintang (KMT) party, were defeated by the Chinese Communists just after World War II. This is the origin of the two Chinas, the communist one on the mainland and the nationalist one on the island of Formosa: Taiwan. Since then, there have been various attempts by both parties to gain full control of China but without any success. However, with the economic takeoff of Communist China in the last 40 years and with its overwhelming demographics, the balance of power has definitely tipped towards it.
