Europe’s stability and efficient functioning depends on the leadership of the European Union Council. A nation as a whole, not just a particular individual, holds the presidency.

The rotating presidency system dates all the way back to the early days of European integration. For a period of six months, the position places each of the 27 member states at the center of the political conversation on the continent and contributes to the successful operation of the EU as a whole. Every thirteen and a half years, each nation gets to hold the presidency.
